At Cunningham Flooring, our team is consistently asked about kitchen remodels and renovations in our Flagstaff flooring showroom. And what better way to answer common kitchen remodel FAQs, then to bring in our local kitchen remodeling expert in Flagstaff: Kitchen Tune-Up. All answers were provided by Andy at Kitchen Tune-Up.
How much does a kitchen remodel cost?
“This is a very common question that we get…I usually respond with a question: How much does a car cost? There are so many variables that you really must sit down with a kitchen designer to discuss what your goals are for the kitchen. Some people say that spending 5-8% of your home’s value for a total kitchen remodel is appropriate. A common job that we do would be new cabinets, new countertop, backsplash, and floors. The size of your kitchen and the quality of the materials and workmanship will determine your cost. Most contractors will offer free in-home consultations to help you find the services that will fit your budget.”
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
“We have a cabinet restoration service that can be completed in 1 day for most kitchens. This gets your existing cabinets looking new again. But the real answer is: it depends on how much you want to change. Our cabinet updates usually take 1-5 days, depending on what we are changing and how big your kitchen is. But if you are replacing everything, it could take 4-5 weeks.”
Do you have any tips for remodeling your kitchen when you’re on a budget?
“Adding hardware to your existing cabinets is an easy, budget friendly way to update your cabinets. If you want a new kitchen countertop, don’t rule out the new laminates that are available. Painting and Re-facing cabinets are great ways to change the look of your kitchen on a budget- and you can still use your kitchen while the work is being done.”
What kitchen remodel trends are “in” right now? What are the benefits of each trend? The drawbacks?
The biggest trend we see are kitchens that have a clean, uncluttered look. Painted finishes with simple, shaker-style doors are popular. White and gray are popular with navy and green showing up for some contrast. In Flagstaff, Knotty Alder and other woods are still very popular, but still with a simple door style. Painted finishes are not quite as durable or harder to clean than stained finishes. But really, if you are going to stay in your kitchen, then you should do what you like. Just remember that if you get too bold, your house will be harder to sell.
What appliances, cabinets, or countertops should you consider when you’re remodeling your kitchen?
This is a very hard question to answer because everyone has their own style and vision. But I spend a lot of time talking to customers about how their kitchen functions. Things like a trash pull-out, tray dividers, drawer organizers, lazy-susans in the corners, and lots of drawers are always part of my designs. We can often add these things to existing cabinets to increase functionality on a budget.
