What style of area rug is right for you?
Cunningham Flooring is Flagstaff and northern Arizona’s premier area rug shop and flooring showroom. There are so many types of area rugs to choose from, so how do you know which one is right for you? Here are a few of our favorite styles this year:
Persian
Persian-style area rugs are characterized by a symbolic pattern and are traditionally produced in Iran, using wool, silk, or cotton. While an authentic Persian rug can be expensive because of the expert craftsmanship involved in their production, a Persian-style area rug can fall within your budget. A Persian-style rug can add a traditional and classic touch to any room.
- Materials: Wool, silk, or cotton
- Best for: Persian-style rugs add a traditional/classic style to any room, but authentic Persian rugs should be kept away from areas with heavy foot traffic or direct sunlight
- Pricing: $-$$$
Oriental
Oriental rugs are similar to Persian rugs in style, as they’re characterized by a symbolic pattern, but oriental rugs are produced in Asia. This popular style can be expensive, but oriental-style rugs are popular and can match many price points. Oriental rugs will never go out of style, and a traditional Oriental rug can be a treasured heirloom for you and your family.
- Materials: Wool, silk, or cotton
- Best for: Like Persian Rugs, Oriental-style rugs can be a great addition to any room, but authentic Oriental rugs should be kept away from areas with heavy foot traffic or direct sunlight
- Pricing: $-$$$
Shag
This popular style is characterized by a deep pile and a shaggy appearance. It can be made from viscose, nylon, or polyester and its pricepoint can vary. Shag carpet can feel like a warm hug in Flagstaff’s chilly winter months, and is a favorite for warming toes and sprawling out.
- Materials: Nylon, faux fur, polyester, acrylic, or polypropylene
- Best for: Comfort. Add a shag rug to a cold floor to keep your toes warm in Flagstaff’s winter months.
- Pricing: $-$$

How to clean your area rug
Regular Maintenance
Some rugs may require special care, so it’s important to check the instructions tag before you start cleaning your area rug. If the tag contains special instructions, follow those! Otherwise, here’s our advice:
- For smaller rugs, routinely take them outdoors and give them a good shake to remove any larger dirt particles or dust.
- Run the vacuum over your rug on a low setting (this is important, so your rug doesn’t get sucked into the device or damaged).
- Turning your rugs once a year can help keep the color from fading and can evenly distribute the foot traffic.
Deep Cleaning
If your rug’s changed shades or gives off a foul odor, it may be time for a deep cleaning. For rare or valuable rugs, it’s best to hire a professional rug or upholstery cleaner to keep your rug looking great. If you’d like to DIY, check with the manufacturer for their recommendation before cleaning your area rug.
